Montessori education follows the child’s interest to allow learning to happen spontaneously and organically. Many classroom activities are designed to support learning through the coordinated effort of the hands and the mind.
Children are introduced to the materials in the classroom individually. After they’ve been shown the activity, they are free to choose that activity whenever they would like, work until they are satisfied, and then putting everything back so that it is available for the next person.
Social responsibility, empathy, peace, and expressing love for one’s community and the Earth are vital parts of Montessori education. Opportunities abound for exploration with all the senses in care of the self and the classroom (called ‘Practical Life’ in the Montessori curriculum), music, language, math, art, science, cultural studies, and geography. You can learn more about this amazing curriculum, which is practiced by schools worldwide, by visiting AMI USA.
Our History
Nye Beach Montessori School was founded in 1983 by Linda Yapp. She is a beloved member of the community and continues to be a benevolent supporter of the school. Karin Lamberson took the reins in 2022, adding her unique spin on Montessori education.
Karin grew up in Newport and received her AMI Montessori training in St. Louis, MO, and her Master’s degree from Loyola in Baltimore. She has worked in Montessori schools in Philomath, Corvallis, and Albany and is thrilled to return to her hometown to support the children and families of the central coast. In addition to her passion for Montessori education, Karin enjoys spending time in the outdoors with her wife and daughter.
Meet Our Staff
Karin Lamberson, Director and Lead Teacher
Karin always knew she wanted to work with children, and she is excited to return to her hometown to be the director of Nye Beach Montessori School! She has been working in Montessori schools in Albany and Corvallis since 2003, and has been a lead teacher since 2013. She holds a diploma from Association Montessori Internationale and a Master’s degree. Her favorite part about being with children is learning about each one’s unique personality and helping them become the best version of themselves they can. Karin enjoys walking on the beach, playing guitar, birding, camping, and gardening with her family.
Jodi Gann, Classroom Assistant
Jodi is a grateful coastal native who academically grew up in a one classroom school in Logsden. Her early learning environment cultivated her pursuit for higher education which ultimately resulted in a Masters degree from George Fox University. Jodi is excited to join our Nye Beach Montessori School community and work alongside our families. She is passionate about helping to build the resources of children, from boldness to inquisitiveness. In her spare time, Jodi loves crafting, watching movies and adventuring – whether long drives to an awesome museum or walking in the woods.
